Whale Rider Movie Review - 1303 Words
ââ¬Å"My name is Paikea Apirana â⬠¦ and I come from a long line of chiefs stretching all the way back to the whale riderâ⬠(Whale Rider 2002). Paiââ¬â¢s speech at her school function resonates the theme of this movie. Throughout time, gender roles have determined how man and women act, dress, their choice of occupations, interactions with each other, their thought processes and decision making; media, in general then reinforces these conventional ideas. Kellner notes that ââ¬Å"radio, television, film and the other products of media culture provide materials out of which we forge our very identities...â⬠(Kellner 1). Gender stereotypes are developed from these perpetuations on how a man or woman should be. Men are raised to be and often seen as independent, strong and competitive while women are groomed to be submissive and meek and mild mannered. Because of these roles and stereotypes, gender discrimination is still a very prevalent issue in todayââ¬â¢s world. The movieââ¬â¢s plot is based on a young womanââ¬â¢s desire to become chief of her tribe and the challenges she faces in trying to show her grandfather that she is worthy of being a leader, despite her gender. Whale Rider is an excellent study on gender and how it affects relationships. Much can be learned by studying how the film portrays the changing role of women, the importance of cultural identity (within her tribe) and challenging stereotypes.
